Music, testimony, and the hope of the gospel

This Sunday evening we are really looking forward to welcoming The Church Flute Band to St Paul’s & St Barnabas for a special evening of praise, music, testimony, and encouragement.

The Church Flute Band is an outreach ministry of The Gathering Belfast, based in the Pitt Park area of East Belfast. Their aim is simple and powerful: to promote the gospel message through the playing of hymns and worship in the melody style of flute and drum.

The band is open to anyone, regardless of ability or background, and brings together people from across Northern Ireland who share a love of music, faith, fellowship, and witness.

Formed by Rev Ross Munro, the band seeks to use the passion and tradition of band culture as a way of helping people hear the good news of Jesus Christ, explore faith, and use their gifts for the glory of God.

A growing outreach ministry

What began as a new ministry has quickly grown, with around 35 members and a busy programme of events across Northern Ireland and beyond.

It is a wonderful example of how God can use ordinary people, familiar traditions, musical gifts, and honest testimony to open doors and point people towards the hope found in Christ.

This is not simply about performance. It is about witness, encouragement, fellowship, and faith.

“The Church Flute Band has brought me back to me. You know, it’s brought me back to life as to who I really am.”
Davy Clarke, East Belfast

A story of hope restored

One of the most moving stories connected with the band is that of Davy Clarke from East Belfast. Davy grew up around bands and music, playing from childhood alongside his father and later with other bands across the city.

Yet, after years away from playing, and following the death of his wife in 2018, he found himself stuck in a rut and disconnected from something that had once been a huge part of his life.

After being encouraged by a friend and former bandmate to come along to The Church Flute Band, Davy eventually went, and he has spoken openly about the difference it has made in his life. He described how the band has brought hope back, restored something of his faith, and helped him rediscover who he is.

More than performance

That is a wonderful reminder that music can be more than performance. In the hands of God, it can become witness, encouragement, healing, fellowship, and hope. It can bring people together. It can open doors. It can help people hear again the hymns of faith and the message of Christ in a fresh way.

So we are delighted to host The Church Flute Band at St Paul’s & St Barnabas and to share in an evening that will bring together praise, testimony, music, and gospel encouragement.
