A Life-Saving Gift:
The Corey Aughey Foundation
Donates a Defibrillator
About Corey Aughey
Corey Aughey was a young man with a deep connection to this parish. His family has a long and valued history with St Paul's and St Barnabas, and Corey himself attended church here on many occasions. He was known to those in our congregation, and his loss has been deeply felt, not only by his family and friends, but by all who knew him.
Corey passed away in May 2022 following a tragic swimming accident while on a family holiday. His death was a devastating loss, and the grief felt by those who loved him has been immense. Yet from that grief, something remarkable has emerged: a foundation established in his name, with a mission to honour his memory by protecting the lives of others.
The Corey Aughey Foundation
In the aftermath of Corey's passing, his family established The Corey Aughey Foundation with the purpose of keeping his legacy alive in a practical and lasting way. The Foundation raises funds to purchase and donate defibrillators to communities, public spaces, schools, churches and other organisations across the area. Each device placed represents not only the potential to save a life, but a living memorial to a young man who is greatly missed.
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any age, in any place. By placing these devices in communities where they are accessible and ready to use, The Corey Aughey Foundation is doing something both quietly extraordinary and deeply Christian in spirit: loving neighbours in the most practical way possible.
What a Defibrillator Does
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that can detect and treat sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. Modern AEDs are designed to be used by anyone, including those with no medical training, and provide clear spoken instructions to guide a user through each step.
Why it matters
10% Survival rates drop by around 10% for every minute without treatmentHaving an AED on site and knowing where to find it can be the difference between life and death. The addition of a defibrillator to St Paul & St Barnabas means our building is now better equipped to respond to a medical emergency, whether that involves a member of our congregation, a visitor, or anyone in the surrounding community.
A Gift with a Personal Connection
What makes this gift particularly meaningful to us is the personal connection that runs through it. Corey's family are known to our parish community, and the decision to donate a defibrillator to St Paul & St Barnabas reflects both the trust they have placed in us and the love they continue to carry for Corey. We do not take that lightly.
To receive a gift that has been given out of grief, love and a determination to do good is a profound thing. We are reminded that the church is called to be a place of hope and healing in its community, and this donation is an expression of exactly that. Corey's memory is now woven into the life of this parish in a very real and practical way.
"We pray that Corey's legacy will continue to bless, protect and help others in the years ahead."
Our sincere thanks
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to Corey's family and to every person who has supported The Corey Aughey Foundation. The work they are doing is courageous, generous and genuinely life-saving. We are honoured to be recipients of this gift and we will ensure the defibrillator is prominently located, properly maintained and accessible whenever it is needed.
We continue to hold Corey's family in our thoughts and prayers. We trust that in the midst of grief there is comfort in knowing that the love they have for Corey is now reaching beyond them, into the lives of others, in a way that could one day save a life. That is a legacy worth celebrating.
